Residential care explained

What is residential care?

Residential care means moving into a setting where trained staff are on hand day and night, rather than receiving support at home. Someone has their own room and their own routine, with help available for washing, dressing, medication and getting around — alongside meals, laundry and housekeeping.

We provide residential care support in Eastbourne and across East Sussex, including Hastings, Bexhill-on-Sea, Seaford, Hailsham, Polegate & Willingdon, Peacehaven and Brighton.

It usually becomes the right option when needs have grown beyond what visiting care can safely cover, or when living alone has started to feel isolating. Families often describe the relief of no longer coordinating care around the clock, and of visiting as family again rather than as carers.

Who residential care is for

When staying at home is no longer the safer choice.

Residential care suits older adults who need support available through the day and night, people whose needs have outgrown what visiting care can safely cover, and anyone for whom living alone has become unsafe or isolating.

It's also a practical answer when a family carer can no longer manage alone — whether that's after a fall, a hospital stay, or simply a gradual change that's become hard to keep up with.

FAQs — Residential Care in Eastbourne

Clear answers about fees and what they include, funding help, visiting, settling in, and how residential care compares with staying at home.

Every situation is different — talk it through with us.Call 01323 382414 →
How much does residential care cost?

Fees depend on the room and the level of support someone needs. We'll set out the weekly fee and exactly what it covers in writing before any commitment, so there are no surprises later. Call us for a figure based on your situation.

What is included in the weekly fee?

The fee covers the room, meals and drinks, laundry, housekeeping and day-to-day personal care. Some things are usually arranged separately — hairdressing, chiropody and personal items are the common ones. We'll give you the full list in writing.

Can the council or NHS help with funding?

It depends on savings, income and assessed needs. East Sussex County Council carries out a financial assessment, and some people qualify for NHS support towards nursing or continuing healthcare. We can point you to who to contact, though the decision rests with them, not with us.

Can we visit before deciding?

Please do — and come at a normal time of day rather than a quiet one. Meeting staff, seeing a meal served and talking to people who live there tells you far more than a brochure. No appointment pressure, no commitment.

How long does it take to settle in?

Most people need a few weeks, and the first days are often the hardest for families as well. Familiar belongings, photographs and keeping to old routines all help. We'll keep you updated in those early weeks so you're not left wondering.

How does residential care compare with care at home?

Home care keeps someone in familiar surroundings and suits needs that visits can cover safely. Residential care makes sense when support is needed at unpredictable times, when living alone has become unsafe, or when a family carer can no longer manage. We're happy to talk through both honestly.
